If you want a Klimt on your Mac, start with the paintings below. One warning first: set The Kiss as it is and macOS cuts off both faces, because the painting is square and the screen is wide. They were picked from the 120 Klimts in Art4 on October 10, 2026.

Keeping the faces in The Kiss

The shaded bands are what a MacBook cuts off when the wallpaper is set to Fill Screen.

The default placement keeps the middle of the picture. It takes the man’s head and most of the woman’s face, and leaves robes, meadow, and feet. There are three ways around it.

  • Fit to Screen. macOS shows the whole square with bars at the sides.
  • Crop the file yourself. Cut a wide strip from the top of the image, so the faces stay and part of the meadow goes, then set the cropped file.
  • Choose the crop in an app. Art4 lets you drag the visible area up or down before it sets the wallpaper.

Klimts that crop well

Of the 120 Klimts, 54 are square. The square landscapes are the easy ones: On Lake Attersee is almost entirely water, and Beech Grove I is tree trunks from edge to edge, so losing a third of either still leaves a picture of water or of trees.

For an external monitor, two wide works fit. Two Girls with an Oleander is almost exactly the shape of an ultrawide. Water Serpents II is close to 16:9, though the file Art4 has is small and looks soft on a 4K monitor.

Questions about Klimt wallpapers

Why are Klimt’s landscapes square?

He chose the format. According to the Klimt Database of the Klimt Foundation in Vienna, he painted his first square landscapes in 1899 and used the square for every landscape after that, looking for his compositions through a piece of cardboard with a square opening.

Is Klimt’s work in the public domain?

Yes. Klimt died in 1918, and his paintings are in the public domain. On your own desktop any reproduction is fine.

Which Klimt suits an upright monitor?

The tall ones: 46 of the 120 are upright. Judith I, the Portrait of Emilie Flöge, and the Tree of Life design for the Stoclet Frieze are all about twice as high as they are wide.
